How Does This Work Privately?

Most background removal tools require you to upload your photos to a cloud server where the AI processing happens. This can be a privacy concern for personal photos or sensitive documents.

DuckConvert uses WebAssembly (WASM) and ONNX Machine Learning models directly inside your web browser. The first time you use this tool, the AI model itself (not your image) is downloaded from assets.duckconvert.com, our own asset host, and cached on your device. All the heavy lifting (detecting the subject and removing the background) then happens on your own CPU/GPU. Your images are never transmitted over the internet.

Putting something back behind the subject costs nothing extra. The cutout stays in the page, and a colour, a blurred copy of your original or a picture you choose is drawn onto a canvas underneath it — ordinary browser drawing, no second model and no second download. That is why switching between white, a blur and your own image is instant.

What image formats can I use?

PNG, JPG, and WebP go in. What comes out depends on what you put behind the subject: leave it transparent and you get a PNG, because JPG can't store transparency at all. Once there's a colour, a blur or your own picture back there, there's no transparency left to lose, and JPEG is offered as well — usually several times smaller than the same PNG for a photograph.

Can I put something behind the subject instead of nothing?

Yes — a solid colour, a blurred copy of the original photo, or an image of your own. That is usually what people actually wanted: white for a marketplace listing, a brand colour for a slide, a blur for a portrait where the room should stay recognisable but not readable. Switching between them is instant, because the AI cutout is kept in the page and only the compositing is redone. The model does not run again and nothing is downloaded again.

Does the background image I choose get uploaded?

No. It is read by the page and drawn onto a canvas next to the cutout, exactly like the photo you started with. Nothing about either image is sent anywhere — there is no server in this tool to send it to.

How accurate is the background removal?

It's an on-device ML model rather than a hand-tuned service, so results are generally strong on clear subjects (people, products, animals) but, like any automated background remover, can struggle with fine detail such as loose hair strands or semi-transparent edges. There's no server-side touch-up step to fall back on.

Does the first run take longer than later ones?

Yes. The AI model itself has to be downloaded and cached in your browser the first time you use the tool. It comes from assets.duckconvert.com, our own asset host, rather than from the model author's CDN, so no third party sees the request. Your photo is never part of that download. Once cached, subsequent background removals on the same device are faster since only the image itself needs processing.
